AI study apps: 6 questions parents should ask first

· 3 min read

AI study apps can be genuinely useful, but not all of them are built with teenagers or their parents in mind. Before your child starts using one, these six questions will tell you most of what you need to know.

1. What age is it for?

Many online services set a minimum age of 13, and some are for adults only. Check the terms and make sure your child meets the requirement. If an app asks for no age at all, that's worth noticing.

2. What happens to what they type?

When a child pastes notes or a question into an AI tool, that text usually goes to an AI provider to be processed. Find out who the provider is, whether the app stores conversations, and whether chats are used for anything else. A clear privacy notice in plain English is a good sign. Remind your child not to paste in names, addresses or other private details.

3. How does it handle mistakes?

AI makes errors, sometimes confidently. A good app says so openly and encourages checking. Be wary of any tool that promises "perfect answers" or "guaranteed grades". Nobody can promise that.

4. How much does it really cost?

Look beyond the headline price. Is there a free plan, and what are its limits? Does a paid plan renew automatically, and how do you cancel? Can your child sign up for a paid plan without you? Payments for under-18s generally need a parent's involvement, and you should always be the one to enter card details.

5. How secure is the account?

A study account holds notes and progress, so basic security matters. Look for sensible sign-in protection, such as two-factor authentication, and the ability to change your password and delete the account easily.

6. Does it help them learn, or just give answers?

The best tools get the student to do the thinking: quizzing, explaining, giving feedback. A tool that mostly writes finished answers for copying may leave your child worse off. Ask them to show you how they use it.
